in Winston-Salem NC, began his swimming career at age 7 with
the Winston-Salem YMCA. After graduation from North Forsyth
High School as the NC state champion in the 200 yard IM, he
was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point as
a recruit for the men’s swimming team. After only 8
short weeks, a knee injury precluded him from service and
he returned to Winston-Salem. The following year he was accepted
to UNC and gained a spot as a walk-on to the men’s swimming

in the 100 and 200 butterfly and the distance freestyles.
He finished his career at UNC with a top eight performance
